MTP Board and Staff

The Military Toxics Project is governed by a Grassroots Board of Directors. Each member of our Board is a community leader accountable to a grassroots constituency. Board members are elected by MTP Affiliate Member organizations for two-year terms. For a full explanation of MTP's governance structure visit our Bylaws page.

Wilbur Slockish - The Dalles, Oregon
Board Chair

Wilbur Slockish of Columbia River Education and Economic Development in The Dalles, Oregon has served on MTP’s Board since the organization’s founding. He has served as Board Secretary and Board Chair during his many years of involvement in MTP.


Gilbert Sanchez - San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico
Board Treasurer

Gilbert Sanchez of the Tribal Environmental Watch Alliance in San Ildefonso Pueblo, NM was elected to the Board in October 2001. He has served as Board Secretary and Treasurer, and is active in several regional and national efforts.


Doris Bradshaw - Memphis, Tennessee
Board Secretary

Doris Bradshaw of the Defense Depot Memphis Tennessee Concerned Citizens Committee was first elected to the Board in 1998, and served as Board Chair from October 1999 to October 2001. She works locally, nationally, and internationally for environmental justice.


Sparky Rodrigues - Wai'Anae, Hawai'i

Sparky Rodrigues of Malama Makua in Hawai’i was elected to his second term on the Board in the fall of 2003. He manages a satellite community television facility, helping create programming truly representative of community views.


Carol Dwyer - Concord, Massachusetts

Carol Dwyer is a member of Grassroots Action for Peace and Citizens Research and Environmental Watch in Concord, Massachusetts. GRAP and CREW organize to stop the environmental and health damage caused by depleted uranium in Concord and around the world.


Mable Mallard - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Mable Mallard is a founder and the main spokesperson for the Right to Know Committee, an organization of neighbors and former workers of the Defense Personnel Support Center. Mable was just elected to MTP's Board for the first time.


Nilda Medina - Vieques, Puerto Rico

Nilda Medina of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV) in Puerto Rico was elected to the Board in October 2001. She is a founding board member of the CRDV and is co-coordinator of the Vieques Peace and Justice Camp.


Pam Miller - Anchorage, Alaska

Pam Miller, Executive Director of Alaska Community Action on Toxics, is both a scientist and community organizer. She has over 20 years of experience in marine research, education, advocacy and activism. She returned to MTP’s board in the fall of 2003.


Laura Olah - Baraboo, Wisconsin

Laura Olah is Executive Director of Citizens for Safe Water Around Badger, a grassroots organization working for a safe and healthy future for the lands of the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant. She is a member of the Sokaogon Ojibwa tribe.


Genaro Rendon - San Antonio, Texas

Genaro Rendon is Co-Director of the Southwest Workers’ Union and the Committee for Environmental Justice Action in San Antonio, Texas. He has been active in developing MTP’s Youth Initiative and in many national collaborations.


Evelyn Yates - Pine Bluff, Arkansas

Evelyn Yates is the Director of Pine Bluff for Safe Disposal in Arkansas, and serves on the governing bodies of the National Black Environmental Justice Network, and the Southwest Region African American Environmental Justice Network.


MTP Staff


Tara Thornton
Executive Director

Ms. Thornton has worked in the environmental movement for over 15 years.  She worked previously with the National Toxics Campaign Fund as an organizer, and was the statewide organizer for the Citizen’s Trade Campaign in Maine.  Ms. Thornton has also coordinated outreach programs for several environmental organizations including: Texans United in Houston, Texas; South Carolina Wildlife Federation; Clean Water Action Project, in Virginia; and the Long Island Citizens Campaign in New York.  She began working as a national organizer with the Military Toxics Project in 1993 and has been involved with all aspects of MTP’s program work. She became Executive Director in 2001.
