Community Empowerment Program MTP works to assist grassroots organizations, not for them, but with them. MTP's Community Empowerment Program provides advice, training, resources, and support to local leaders and organizations confronting military and defense-related contamination by working with them, not for them. We work with neighborhood groups, Indigenous tribes, veterans' organizations, and many other constituencies. Because of our commitment to environmental justice, MTP prioritizes assistance and support for Indigenous communities, low-income communities, and communities of color. Click here to learn more about environmental justice. You can also work with other organizations to change national policies that affect your community through MTP’s national campaign and issues areas. Visit our Healthy Communities Campaign page to learn about national efforts, and visit our Issue pages to learn more about specific problems and solutions. Some Community Empowerment programs and resources are only available to MTP members. Membership allows grassroots organizations greater access to MTP programs and greater input into campaigns and other decisions. Click Here to join MTP online. Community Exchange Program The skills and knowledge we need to protect our
communities from military toxics already exist in our movement. Dozens of
community leaders from all over the country became experts in organizing,
document analysis, media strategies, and other areas by fighting military toxics
in their neighborhoods. We all learn more and learn better from someone in a
similar situation, instead of from “experts” who know nothing about our
communities. Scholarship Assistance To win change in our communities, we must make sure our voices and struggles are heard by decision makers on the national level. MTP provides scholarships for community leaders to attend important national events and meetings about military toxics. We will usually pay for one person from an organization to attend an event, and challenge the local group to raise money to send others. To apply for scholarship assistance, contact the national office for guidelines and an application form (207-783-5091 or mtp@miltoxproj.org). Applications must be received at least one month before the event you want to attend. Scholarship Assistance is only available to MTP member organizations. Click here to join MTP. Organizing and Fundraising Training Our power as local organizations and as a movement comes from our ability to organize our communities and fund our work. MTP helps community leaders learn how to organize and raise money. MTP provides organizing and fundraising assistance in several ways.
Some organizing and fundraising resources are available on our web site. For other assistance, call our national office at 207-783-5091 or email us. Information Communities struggle to gain information about contaminated military sites, laws and regulations governing the military, and military actions in other places. MTP provides information and training for local groups in how to access information.
Information resources on our web site include: Click Here to join an MTP email list to receive email updates and alerts from MTP, or to join an MTP email discussion list serve. Networking MTP helps local groups connect with and learn from each other. We have the knowledge and skills we need within our own movement – we just need to share it. You can network with other groups by:
Contact our office at 207-783-5091 or mtp@miltoxproj.org for networking assistance. Solidarity We are stronger when we all stand together. MTP helps local groups act together to change national policy and support each other’s struggles. MTP can help your organization rally support from other groups at critical times and get the word out to other organizations and the media about your work. Join an MTP list serve or contact our office (see contact information below) to publicize your struggle. |
